Telos debuts Audio-over-Ethernet system for Broadcast
Livewire gives broadcasters all the benefits of a traditional cross-point switcher, without the cost and complexity. Taking advantage of computer industry scale, Ethernet networked audio provides flexibility at a surprising low cost, simplifying wiring complexity and replacing sound cards, switchers, patch bays, distribution amplifiers and other discrete audio routing components. A Livewire 100base-T link can carry 50 bi-directional stereo channels of 48kHz, 24-bit PCM audio. A 1000base-T link or Gigabit fiber can carry hundreds...
In addition to Livestream traffic, Livewire allows other forms of more routine network traffic on the same Ethernet. For example, PC's can send IP-standard audio streams over the network to be mixed and merged with Livestream data. Even non-audio message traffic, such as program associated data (PAD) and routine communications can all be conveyed over the same network, without dropouts, delays or errors.
Each audiosignal carries data with it, that contains severall parameters and the name of the source/destination.
At NAB Telos introduced 7 new products featuring Livewire technology :
- The microphone terminal : offers 8 mic-inputs and 8 line outputs
- The analog Line terminal : offers 8 stereo analog inputs and outputs
- The AES/EBU terminal : provides 8 AES inputs and outputs
- The router selector terminal : allows users to scroll and listen to available audio sources, while also providing I/O access.
- The Studio Engine : provides extremely powerfull mixing and processing, based on a Pentium-4 motherboard with a robust version of the Linux real-time operating system.
- The Studio Console Surface : offering a real console interface for the Studio Engine
- The Livewire PC-driver : eliminates the need of soundcards and offers up to 6 ins and 3 outs to a PC (windows2000 or XP) over the standard Ethernet connection in the Livewire format !
All of the terminals run a version of Linux on an embedded processor for ultra-reliable network operations and extremely low delay. A built-in webserver enables remote configuration and control - all in an intuitive plan language manner - via standard browser interface.
On 21st May Apex will organise a seminar in Belgium held by Steve Church, president of Telos, explaining the in-depth technical details of Livewire. A fully working setup will be in-place at the seminar.
Stay tuned for more information as it comes available !
