New HHB PORTADRIVE: Portable for high-end audio

The PORTADRIVE records over 3 hours of uncompressed 8-channel 24-bit/96kHz or over 12 hours of 4 channel 24-bit/48khz audio onto a resilient and removable 30GB hard disk, the only storage device type with a proven track-record in reliable mobile acquisition. An extensive range of input and output connectivity avoids the requirement for non-standard, expensive signal cables and includes eight line inputs, four line outputs, eight channels of digital I/O and six high gain, very low noise XLR microphone inputs. All mic inputs feature individual phantom powering, gangable limiters, input pads, high pass filter, adjustable delay (essential when working with radio mics) and phase reverse, empowering PORTADRIVE production mixers to capture pristine sound from multiple microphone sources while on the move.

In recent years, there has been a gradual rise in the use of digital, non-linear, file based systems in the workflow methods evolving in the film, tv and music production and post-production industries. The PORTADRIVE has been designed from the outset to present an acquisition system which further enhances the flow and efficiency of the original location audio through the workflow chain. Specifically this is expedited by recording in either AES31 or Pro Tools V5 session formats, using BWF or SDII audio files respectively. This enables the direct, high-speed transfer of recorded data to Mac and PC workstations for post production, a process which is facilitated by the PORTADRIVE Docking Station. This optional device locates in a standard 5.25' drive bay or external Firewire, USB2 or SCSI enclosure and accommodates the PORTADRIVE's removable HD caddy via a slot on the front panel.
Significantly, PORTADRIVE is capable of recording a simultaneous mono or stereo mix to HHB's optional DC-powered external DVD-RAM/DVD-R/DVD-RW drive, creating instant rushes in the field for use by picture editors who generally prefer to work with mono or stereo sound rushes to simplify their editing process. This optional drive or other SCSI device can also be used to back-up sessions at the end of the day. USB2 and 10/100 Ethernet connectivity are also provided to allow bi-directional high-speed transfer of data.

Built-in are three independent 6-into-2 mixers, the first providing a mono or stereo mix to disc, the second an alternative mix which could be used as a directors feed and the third, a designated headphone mix ensuring that what is seen the metering is what the user hears. MS decoding is available on all inputs and outputs as well as within the internal mixers. Primary Mode buttons allow instant access to the control, metering and monitoring of all audio signals while comprehensive internal routing ensures total flexibility when recording from analogue and digital sources simultaneously. Top panel facilities have been arranged into a highly intuitive, hierarchical navigation system enabling the user to set every system parameter via a large, transreflective LCD display. Power is delivered by an industry standard NP1 Lithium Ion battery, AC adapter/charger or external DC input, and the PORTADRIVE is equipped with comprehensive timecode facilities compatible with all popular frame rates.

Full production will commence in August with first units shipping in September
