Simple Minds 'Floating World Tour' and Apex Intelli-Q
A glance at the tour-date website www.sm-tours.com shows Simple Minds to be one of the hardest working bands out there. Apex caught up with ace
Front of House sound-man Patrick Demoustier at the Manchester Apollo where they were played two packed houses to rave reviews.
Demoustier, a strong supporter of Apex over the years, had two Intelli-Qs in the rack, one driving the Left and Right Floor-stacked Adamson Y18 line-array boxes and the other separately feeding the Left and Right flying Y10s.
Get in Phase.........
In addition to precision, sound-quality and speed, Demoustier uses the Intelli-Q over other Digital EQs for another important reason.
Says Demoustier ' Phase is very important, especially when you are using high-end line array systems. Many digital devices promise much in the way of features but due to processing delays and other factors adversely affect the phase of the output signal, which is unacceptable in a high-end device'.
'I have a critical test for this. I bring the two channels into the desk in mono then pan them both to the centre. The sound should not change at all if you listen to the mix while switching the EQ 's in and out on the insert.
'The Intelli-Q passes this test with flying colours, you'd be surprised how many other devices do not'
Demoustier's 'Old Jazz Trick'......
Listening to a monitors-only sound-check (main PA switched off) it's immediately apparent that Simple Minds' drummer plays very loud.Very, very loud.
So very, very, very loud that, even in a reasonably sized venue, a good proportion of the audience hear a lot of the drum kit from source along with the mixed sound from the speakers.
To enhance this Demoustier employs what he calls an 'old jazz trick'. As each channel on the Intelli-Q also has delays available, Demoustier used the Intelli-Q, not only to independently EQ the flying and floor mounted speaker systems but also to precisely delay the main PA to be in-phase with the source drums.
