Apex Intelli-X2 rocks Werchter
Each year since 1975, Rock Werchter has been held over the last weekend in June in the village of Werchter in the Belgian countryside, approximately 30 kilometres from Brussels. From small beginnings, it has grown to become one of Europe’s biggest festivals, is a ‘must’ on hundreds of thousands of music fans’ calendars and attracts a stellar line up, which this year included Coldplay, The Black Eyed Peas, Elbow, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, The Chemical Brothers and Linkin Park.
The audio system for the festival is supplied by Belgium-based EML Productions, with chief engineer, Patrick Demoustier, utilising Apex Audio’s new Intelli-X² 48s for the first time. “I have chosen the Intelli-X² as a front end line drive system for the RW2011 festival because it is the only device on the market that can handle different AES or analogue inputs at the same time,” Patrick explains. “It can even handle different AES inputs with different sample rates at the same time, since it has a SRC converter on every input.” The Intelli-series comprises two system management devices, Intelli-X² 26 (2 in, 6 out) and the Intelli-X² 48 (4in, 8 out), used here. Both are designed to be Plug-and-Play, with the Intelli-X² being simple to configure and integrate into any network, and providing all the system management tools necessary for comprehensive system alignment and EQ, through to the provision of IIR and FIR based crossovers.
The system is, says Patrick, remarkably flexible and extreme handy at a festival where most of the bands carry their own mixing consoles, which means there is the potential for a wide variety of setups. “On the first day alone, we had seven different desks that had to be connected to the PA system,” he recalls. He continues, “Another smart function is the fact that it has a real matrix mix system, so every input can be sent to every output with different levels… very nice! Small details make big differences, a simple on /off switch in the delay settings is very nice to align subs. As I said, it is a small detail, but nobody else has this feature and it makes things so easy. “And last but not least, the sound of the device is very good – top of the range! Metering is very accurate and real time, the compressor and limiter functions sound very analogue. “The software will be continuously updated with new features, but as it stands it is very intuitive and if it continues to evolve in the same way, it will truly be an excellent device.”
